Home based businesses have been around since the Geiko caveman. Recently, there has been a bit of a surge in home businesses, likely caused by the bad economy.

The tide makes complete sense as many are becoming caught in the wave of employment, salary reductions, and cut back in hours. However, this also does not make much business sense at this time for the same reason. Fewer people have money to spend and those that still have money to spend have less of it and are being far more cautious.

These new entrepreneurs by choice of the economy will find that the competition is stiff. There are more home based businesses now with less purchasing power to go around, making it very important to be smart at how they approach home businesses. Being able to accept all types of payment methods, including credit cards, will be an important part of getting ahead in their business.

Merchant services have been making it much easier over the last several years for home based businesses to accept the credit card purchases. One the first and most popular ways to do this wass through Paypal. Paypal, strictly an online application, was and still is the most popular among eBay sellers and buyers.

There are plenty of solutions beyond Paypal, many of which were spawned out of the shortfalls found by home based businesses that were not a strictly online business. Today you can find nearly all of the equipment that you would use in a traditional brick and mortar business for your home based business. From point of sale equipment (including wireless for you to take to those home shows) to software to pinpads.

You will find that the most successful home businesses in any industry will be accepting all forms of payment. They will have Paypal as well another merchant account so that they can take care of their client no matter what way they wish to pay. They will not lose sales due to an inability to accept the payment method that any customer wishes to use.

Before getting a merchant account for your home business, you should make sure that you do all of your homework on this one. It can be a bit mundane, but it also can save you a lot of money as well as make you money because you are offering the right things for potential customers. Homework, as we tell our kids, is a necessary evil of getting it right.

You may wonder if this is all worth it. Is it really a necessity to accept credit cards in a home based business? Let me answer that question with one word ? impulse. We are all impulse buyers. When that impulse is gone, so is the sale. If you cannot accept the kind of payment that I have at that moment of impulse, then you will lose out on a sale. I am not the only one that behaves that way either. As matter of fact, I am with the majority. If you cannot accept my credit card, then I will go to your competitor who can.
